I truly believe the worst of it’s behind us. The rest of the work week goes by without hassle or interference from the police, FBI, or SEC. I don’t hear anything from Bruno, either, so I assume he got the phone stashed in time.

Or else I would have heard about it.

Rebecca gives me one hundred and ten per cent the rest of the week, and I’m well and truly blown away by her performance so far. She’s efficient, self-sufficient, and a real delight to be around to boot.

Plus, she’s kept our little fling a secret. And that’s always appreciated.

She deserves so much for all that she’s done already. I’m looking forward to our weekend together, and finding her a place away from that hellhole on the south side of town’s all the better. It’ll keep her closer to me, away from danger on the rough side of town. Our lives can only get better from here.

I’ll admit, I think she’s perfect for me. Maybe that’s why I want to have her so close. I’d married a woman I had less in common with. Rebecca’s better than her in every way, and I’d bet my entire fortune on a life with her.

She and I could have a real shot at things.

And not that I’m inclined to believe in such things, but maybe this is part of it.

Maybe she’s the one.

Each night, Rebecca and I meet up in my office after the rest of my employees have left for the day. We pretend we’re going over schedules as I lock the door behind us and open up the panic room.

We manage to get a little work done after hours. But after that, all bets are off the table, literally and figuratively as we sweep the papers aside to make room for our nightly sessions together.

As we sink into one another, bodies pressed tight together, I can’t help but feel like I’ve found my true calling in life.
